From a Single Brewery to a National Conglomerate
Headquartered in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is a Philippine multinational conglomerate whose revenues have been equivalent to roughly 4% of the country's gross domestic product. Its flagship product, San Miguel Beer, is among the best-selling beers in the world.
The company began as Southeast Asia's first modern brewery and was incorporated in 1893. It started exporting by 1914, reaching markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Guam. In the postwar era, SMC pursued vertical integration — building its own power plant, glass bottle manufacturing facilities, a liquid carbon dioxide plant, and a carton plant — laying the foundation for the diversified group it is today.
