About the Company

Powering the Nation's Capital for Over a Century

"Meralco" comes from the company's original name, the Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company, which it carried until 1919 when it became the Manila Electric Company. Beyond Metro Manila — where it is the sole distributor — its franchise area extends to the entire provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal, and parts of Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, and Pampanga.

Meralco's history includes several firsts: by 1930 it had completed the Philippines' first hydroelectric power plant, the 23 MW Botocan Hydro Station. In the early 1960s, a group of Filipino investors led by Eugenio Lopez Sr. bought Meralco from its American owners — the first major American enterprise in the country to be "Filipinized."
